not so hot at standing in line

the firefly
went to the bank
to check, I guess,
her balance
hers may be
much better than mine
but she’s not so hot at
standing in line
in spite of
her other talents

2 masked robbers stormed the joint
flashing their automatics
and the firefly
to prove a point
in a manner most undemocratic
turned on the charm
until both were disarmed
which another time might seem immoral
but the 2 were so stunned
that they put down their guns
and withdrew without any withdrawal

some of us are chickens

i’m not gonna
think  about
impending devastation
the way the
planet’s headedostrich
only leads
to aggravation
i’m not gonna
focus on
eventual demise
when i think about
these things
i’m paralyzed
not everyone’s
a fighter
not every soul
is spunky
some of us
are chickens
some of us
are monkeys
some of us
are younger
some have served
our terms
someone’s got to
check in on the worms

eager to succumb

companion piece to web slinger

the sultry, savvy spider sets
her own successful traps
sticky, strong, she strings along
some unsuspecting saps

so it was with her and him,
she the spider, on a whim,
released the pest he had become,
though he was eager to succumb

no sneakers

the marathon began at 1
a thousand avid ants
fire-ants-1790262_960_720now race across the kitchen floor
i’ve tried but yet i can’t
locate the place the race began
to staunch the flow or stop it
it seems to end where my veal cutlet
landed when i dropped it
the runners wear no sneakers
no numbers on their backsfire-ants-1790262_960_720
their uniform is, to an ant,
entirely jet black
they don’t get winded
don’t slow down
they’re made of tougher stuff
i cheer them on with insect spray
i hope i have enough

how’d it get my netflix passcode?

the spring’s first crocus
hides its light
beneath the snow
bides its time
most patiently
until it’s time
to grow
don’t waste
a moment’s pity on
this independent plant
it’s binge watching
some tv shows
its momma
said it can’t

their habit

a splendid sky in summer

sunrise pulls me
from a deep
and very pleasing slumber,
dreaming of a sunny day,
a splendid sky
in summer…
passing by the window
i see winter’s been employed
covering the hemisphere
i recently enjoyed,
working til the wee hours
blinding eyes
with ceaseless white,
winter’s had a rather busy night…
snow that bends the willow,
masquerades the field
i’m tempted by my pillow

and i yield

she will tell you
if you ask her
she’s the ever-

it ain’t easy
it ain’t funny

raising kittens
working late
single momma,

getting tired now
getting cranky
got no time for

meeting deadlines
this should come as

waiting for the Christmas snow…

on Christmas eve, as in the past,
4 sisters with eyes of glass
watched through windows laced with frost,
excited giggles, fingers crossed
they held their breath, their hopes sincere
maybe there’ll be snow this year

the next year brought a Christmas trip
the youngest sister bit her lip
and didn’t think they ought to go,
as this year they had promised snow
but they returned when New Year’s Day
had melted all the snow away.

the next years brought the wedding veil,
the oldest sister set to sail,
the 2nd sister moved away,
the 3rd sister refused to stay.
and so the youngest, all alone,
a little sad, a little grown,
watched the sun in summer’s glow
and then on Christmas, watched the snow.

squeaky squeaky

mice have come and pillaged
things we bought in cardboard boxes
things that came in plastic bags
they left us gifts that are obnoxious
mice are cute, but what a drag
jody closed the bathroom door
and stepped into the shower
then squeaky squeaky freaked her out
and she cowered for over an hour
her terrified screams
shook the house beams
and we’re sure the whole
neighborhood heard her
please jody be calm
said her big brother tom
mice are too timid for murder
when tom burst into the bathroom
to end the entire affair
the little mouse had vanished
through a hole that wasn’t there
