opposing views

letticia had an illness
she wanted it to end
she didn’t know its nature
she confided in a friend
the friend said see your doctor
her doc said urgi-care
and urgi-care said e.r. , girl,
go take yourself right there
parades of doctors saw her
ordered up some tests
decided that admitting her

would probably be best
they put her in a corner room
with south and east exposure
they put her in a dressing gown
with missing back enclosures

the thing kept falling off of her
the room did not have blinds
and those of you who know me now
know how this tale unwinds
for though she waited patiently
for what might be bad news
she wished she had more privacy
from those opposing views

the wholly holey unholy pair

and underpaid
are clinging
the undercroft
under where
they’re singing
Father Herman’s
sleight of hand
removes the holey pair
he heads up for
his sermon
and he leaves them
laying there
it’s a roaring
that brings them
to their knees
and while they’re
genuflecting there
he’s thankful
for the breeze

the man in the purple suit

check out the shimmy on jimmy
look at what’s shakin’ on jake
going by him he
lives in the gym he’s
got moves though that
make the earth quake!

the man in the purple can movepurple-suit
somethin’ to say or to prove
the man in the purple suit rocks
even got lavender socks!

pink spandex pants on petunia
clinging like flies to old fruit
she wobbles and rolls
doesn’t know she’s got holes
the ‘tude says she thinks it looks cute.

these two fashion potentates are stand out
an eye-popping, mind boggling pair
but neither will catch
this aesthetical match
or notice the other one’s there!

why was she inviting him

the day the invitation came
he threw it in the trash
on second thought
he pulled it out
he shouldn’t be so rash
he put it on the fridge
held on with alphabetic magnets
message-1263977_960_720.pngand wondered how she
had moved on
while he had stayed so stagnant
and why was she inviting him
it seemed a little cruel
they just broke up a week ago
she played him for a fool
he stood a while examining
the envelope, the script
the postmark from so far away
he bit his lower lip
and opened up the envelope
there now, not as upsetting,
this invitation to attend
his little sister’s wedding

no sneakers

the marathon began at 1
a thousand avid ants
fire-ants-1790262_960_720now race across the kitchen floor
i’ve tried but yet i can’t
locate the place the race began
to staunch the flow or stop it
it seems to end where my veal cutlet
landed when i dropped it
the runners wear no sneakers
no numbers on their backsfire-ants-1790262_960_720
their uniform is, to an ant,
entirely jet black
they don’t get winded
don’t slow down
they’re made of tougher stuff
i cheer them on with insect spray
i hope i have enough

so entranced

she dangles,
that exquisite girl,
like a diamond
on a locket
as she twirls
us in
her world,
her son steals
from our pockets
our eyes pursue her
up and down
while he sneaks
right and left
and so entranced
with her are we
that we don’t
mind the theft

how’d it get my netflix passcode?

the spring’s first crocus
hides its light
beneath the snow
bides its time
most patiently
until it’s time
to grow
don’t waste
a moment’s pity on
this independent plant
it’s binge watching
some tv shows
its momma
said it can’t

ballad of a body in decline

once when i was capable
i could walk all day
start out at the ferry
and gladly make my way
home to 84th street
and then play double dutch
once i was unbreakable
once when i was capable
now it hurts
pain pain go away
i’d rather have it rain today
i’d rather have a baby
elephant or maybe
octopus or porcupine
rather than this pain of mine
that can’t be found
on radar screens
or noisy MRI machines
replace my
endo outdoor-skeleton
or please release me
let me go

you are art

you are art
all your life you’ll be
1zr3wnstnvy-aaron-burdenremember that for me
you can’t help
but be that way
it’s in your dna
so go ahead and
live life loud
the ups & downs
the ins & outs
but take your camera,
pencils, paints,
you got something
others ain’t
let it take you
to new places
let it help you
get through stasis
someday when they’re so inclined
your stars may align
and even if they never do
there will remain a piece of you
take heart
are art

not who i am

lately noticinginvisible woman
how things change
how we change
but think we are the same
how we say
that’s not who i am
when now it is

now we are
not who we were
with every passing moment
we are new and different
not always better
not inescapably worse

our who we are
is a present tense
forward from
who we were
precedent to
who we will be
but we cling to the origin
not willing to begin again
with who we have become
