the long long year ahead

on christmas day
we get up when
the youngest one
says please
we open giftschristmas-presents-595850__340
they beat their games
and watch their dvds
next day they file
away their gifts
according to what sort
they’re organized,
for kids of mine,
it’s like a second sport
next day hence
they mope about
they don’t know
why they’re living
and this goes on
for many days
’til round about
when once again
excitement makes
them both come back awake

then they hit rough weather

marge and madge
were once great friends
who facebook reconnected
time had pulled them far apart
they wanted to correct it
they set off on a voyage
the purpose was renewal
but then they hit rough weather
and it ended in a duel
who would get the upper bunk
who would get the lower
who would leave all kinds of junk
who used who’s hair blower
who was always late for tea
who forgot their patience
who would who go sailing with
on subsequent vacations
margie took to instagram
madge went wild on twitter
each escalated socially
madge claiming margie bit her…
so in a way it’s sad to say
they both did some renewing:
hostilities that had been calmed
have been the pair’s undoing

squeaky squeaky

mice have come and pillaged
things we bought in cardboard boxes
things that came in plastic bags
they left us gifts that are obnoxious
mice are cute, but what a drag
jody closed the bathroom door
and stepped into the shower
then squeaky squeaky freaked her out
and she cowered for over an hour
her terrified screams
shook the house beams
and we’re sure the whole
neighborhood heard her
please jody be calm
said her big brother tom
mice are too timid for murder
when tom burst into the bathroom
to end the entire affair
the little mouse had vanished
through a hole that wasn’t there

march of the timorous brigade

harumph, harumph
harumph, harumph
we are the reserves
a nickname we deserve
‘cuz to a man we have
our reservations
harumphing we will go
through wind and
rain and snow
harumphing we will march
with hesitation
harumphing we parade
the timorous brigade
harumphing we retreat
when things get heated

we’re rough
we’re tough
what do we got?
we got enough
we’re it
it’s definite
what are we?
we’re adequate
holy cow
the cat’s meow
what’ll we do?
we’ll do for now

my ho-hum friend

empty-office-hallway-95771_960_720what new wonders
to discover
what old news
i never read
it’s the eve
of the eve
with time
up my sleeve
this place is nearly dead
everyone took off today
except for me and old ennui
so i’m not all alone…
we’ll play pretend,
my ho-hum friend,
i’ll stay with you til three
but then you’re on your own

view of the lake

could never
be so calm
if i could hold it
in my palm,
if i controlled it
like a king
or stored it
in my secret ring
if it were up to
me to say
it shall be nice
and calm today
calm is cool
where it belongs
in peaceful minds
and soothing songs
in any place
where people rest
and on the lake
where it looks best

fantastically bombastic

german is my
favorite language
so enthusiastic
staccato sounds
that bounce around
fantastically bombastic
ich habe hunger
ich habe durst
it’s almost like
there’ll be a star
for the one who
feeds me first
imperative, imperial
impressive german is
guttural, unutterably
expressive german is
ganzen morgen
ganzen abend
authoritative, sonorous
and when it’s
set to music
it’s mellifluous,
oh tannenbaum
auch luftballoon
willst du mit mir gehen
na ja nicht mich
ich liebst du nicht
also, auf wiedersehen

the translations:
ich habe hunger – i am hungry
ich habe durst – i am thirsty
ganzen morgen, ganzen abend – all morning, all evening
oh tannenbaum – oh christmas tree
auch luftballoon –  the balloon too
willst du mit mir gehen – will you go out with me
na ja nicht mich – yeah, no, not me
ich liebst du nicht – i don’t love you
ach, also, auf wiedersehen – oh well, see you later

i don’t ask for fortune
i don’t ask for fame
to know me by my name
i’m not knocking virtue
i’m not praising vice
to write me once or twice

sneaky breezes

sneaky breezes
find the holes
in my mittens
in my soles
head is hurting
 bones are shaking
can’t relax
back is aching
double socks
they do no good
don’t know why
i thought they would
shovel shovel
clear a path
focus focus
do not laugh
or tears may form
and freeze my eyes
winter winter
why oh why
sneaky breezes
find the holes
in my mittens
in my soul
