if he gave the world a look

the vulture has no culture
never been to a museum
never ventured
from his backyard
you will know this carved-vulture-1648236__340
if you see ‘im
if he went to
see a movie
if he read a
lot more books
if he traveled
past his precinct
if he gave the
world a look
he might learn
he might see
he could change
he could be
in polite society
he’d improve his
mind and mood
and he wouldn’t
have to scavenge
for his food

pulling down the shades

victor starts the day with vigor
vigor that fast fades
by 9 a.m. he’s back in bed
pulling down the shades
what’s got into victor
or what is leaking out
best to leave him sleeping
despite our creeping doubts
it may be best to leave him be
believe him, vice versa
despite his lack of energy
he’s still a major ursa

sleeping in with the Daily Prompt – doubt

stale and stinky roses

her perfume packs
a pungent punch
we were just coming spray-1514264__340
back from lunch

but we can
even taste it

this girl has gone
full throttle
must have used the
whole damn bottle
it smells like someone
smothered her in
stale and stinky roses

so we’re switching elevators

halfway through the ride
and going back outside
to try to get her scent
to leave our noses

Daily prompt – scent, because, well…

almost criminal

the word today is liminal
a word that’s almost criminal
that borders on the threshold
doorway-981803__480without coming in or going
unfit for conversation
without awkward hesitation
you wouldn’t say it to a friend
at least not one worth knowing
it has no trace of poetry
it paints a picture woefully
it shouldn’t be in greeting cards
it shouldn’t be in letters
it lingers on the precipice
it is, today, my nemesis
let’s pool our hopes together
that tomorrow’s word is better

the possum won’t be sated

the evening started with a storm
the rain has dissipated
i set aside a bowl of fruit
the possum won’t be sated
i set aside a plate of nuts
that crazy squirrel ate it
i set aside some pumpkin pietrichosurus_vulpecula_3-possum
the possum won’t be sated
what is it he’s looking for
why is he so angry
i try to ask him what he wants
at first he stares back blankly
then he charges at me
like a rabid, rapid bear
and i am in the window now
watching him from there
i think he thinks he owns my yard
from sunset to sunrise
perhaps a formal time-share contract
wouldn’t be unwise
now i’m playing music
in an effort to sedate it
bach brahms mozart strauss
the possum won’t be sated

we first met this guy in this verse

from the west coast to the east

chaotic scenes unfolding
from the west coast to the east
americans get ready for
today’s thanksgiving feast
who forgot that one detail
who is working in retail
who can’t find
a ribbon for their hair
who is overcooking pies
who ran out of what supplies
who is lost on some
side street somewhere
who mixed up their longitude
confused it with their latitude
the chaos doesn’t matter
today we all get fatter
the only thing that matters
is the gratitude

hide the china

may be
happy hope
or fearful
aunticipation is,
the latter
the occasion
the occasion
doesn’t matter
spatting aunts
somehow just can’t
behave in public places
but still it’s always
nice to see their faces

Daily Prompt – anticipation

um uh zombie

too much late at night
playin stayin in the lights
prancin dancin in the dark
runnin barefoot in the park
too much early a.m.
painting faces on the train
rickety rackety
rackety rick
need caffeine now
need it quick
and i arrive and i am here
to sit and stare and type & tap
can’t lay down now, cannot nap
taking orders on the telephone
um uh zombie
um uh zombie
um uh zombie
can’t elicit energy
to find my way back home
eyes closing
dozing dozing
i must be a sight
someday i’ll give up the day job
but how will i pay for the nights?

Daily prompt – elicit

it didn’t smell like mistletoe

when günther joined the circus
he was doing acrobatics
he gave off an aroma
that was hardly aromatic
you were there
so you should know
it didn’t smell like mistletoe
it made life hard for all the
other members of the teamgraphics-skunk-432468
the boy could use a shower
and a scent-infested steam
it wasn’t really günther’s fault
he couldn’t even smell it
he got it from his father’s side,
to hear his mother tell it
günther left the circus life
when they left him behind
he’s moved into the zoo
where they don’t notice… or don’t mind
