ghosts who pay the bills

ghosts

ok i’ll admit it,
part of me wished he’d
come running downstairs
and hug me & thank me & move on from here.

ok, most of me wished it.

it’s the lesson we learn as a mother,
we can’t let them know how it hurts.
we can’t be the center,
we knock before entering
we can’t teach the lessons
that must be self-learned

we got shy
since we got burned
we turned into ghosts,
ghosts who pay the bills.
but we can’t let them know how it hurts.
